Each month, HRTPO staff highlights a project that is currently being implemented within the Hampton Roads region. This month, staff is highlighting the Greate Road (Route 1208) Pedestrian Improvements project in Gloucester County. Six-foot wide sidewalks will be constructed from east of the West Greate Road and Greate Road intersection (Lafayette Heights neighborhood) to Gloucester Point Beach and Public Boat Ramp, a length of three quarters of a mile.
Greate Road is one of the two main roads that provide access to Gloucester Point Beach and with these pedestrian improvements, residents will be able to safely walk to the beach.
The cost estimate for the project is approximately $2.8 million with roughly $200,000 expended on the Preliminary Engineering (PE) phase as of June 2022. The PE Phase will continue through 2023 with Right of Way (RW) planned for 2024 and most of 2025. Construction is tentatively set for Fall 2025 with completion scheduled for November 2026.
