On October 6, HRTPO’s Active Transportation staff attended a Portsmouth Public Schools Safety Town class for 3rd graders. Safety Town teaches Portsmouth 1st and 3rd graders about bus safety, “stranger danger”, pedestrian safety, and bicycle safety. Safety Town staff and volunteers provide classroom instruction and then take the children to the streets of Safety Town to practice what they have learned. The October 6 class covered bike safety. The students were taught rules of the roads, being aware of vehicles and surroundings, and bike signaling. National research has found that educating elementary-aged children is the best way to promote bike safety.
