Governor Bob McDonnell released the results of the performance and financial audit of the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) on September 23, 2010. The audit, performed by an independent firm, began in April 2010 at an estimated cost of $424,000. The audit examined VDOT's operations to identify cost-savings strategies, organizational efficiencies, and performance and operational metrics. The audit identified over 50 recommendations that may accelerate the planning and delivery of over $1 billion in maintenance and construction projects. The Governor has given the Secretary of Transportation and the VDOT Commissioner 45 days to develop a full action plan to address the audit findings.
