The Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) is a multi-year program for the implementation of surface transportation projects within the Hampton Roads Metropolitan Planning Area (MPA). Before any federally funded and/or regionally significant surface transportation project can be built in the Hampton Roads MPA, it must be included in the current TIP that has been approved by the Board of the Hampton Roads Transportation Planning Organization.
The FY 2024-2027 Transportation Improvement Program (TIP), approved by the HRTPO Board last May, has received Federal approval and went into effect on October 1, 2023. The HRTPO FY 2024-2027 TIP was made available for public review and comment from March 6, 2023 through April 5, 2023. The new TIP represents a full update of the TIP – the previous full update having been approved in May 2020.
The FY 2024-2027 TIP has over 260 transportation projects within the Hampton Roads Region with a total funding amount of $2.8 Billion. There is a wide variety of project types within the FY 24-27 TIP including Bridge Rehabilitation/Replacement, Bike and Pedestrian facilities, Roadway Reconstruction with Added Capacity, and Traffic management as well as others.
In conjunction with the new TIP, HRTPO staff updated the TIP website (www.HRTPOTIP.org). The website includes a robust project information search tool, an interactive project map, comprehensive information on the development of the TIP, detailed procedures for requesting revisions to the TIP, and links to several other TIP related documents.
The TIP website provides two user-friendly tools to search for projects of interest. The TIP Project Search Tool allows one to search for a project by entering criteria such as a street name or project description. An Advanced Search option allows the user to filter the search by jurisdiction, project type, etc. The TIP Interactive Project Map(see image below) provides a geographic search option, allowing the user to find project information by zooming into an area and clicking on a project on the map.
The HRTPO TIP website and FY 2024-2027 TIP document are typically updated on a monthly basis as requests for amendments and modifications are received. Please contact John Mihaly jmihaly@hrtpo.org or Kathlene Grauberger kgrauberger@hrtpo.org for questions or comments related to the FY 2024-2027 HRTPO TIP.
