Each month, HRTPO staff highlights a project that is currently being implemented within the Hampton Roads region.  This month, staff is highlighting Hampton Roads Transit’s Norfolk Bus Shelters and Pedestrian Improvements project.  The purpose of this project is to install 40 new bus shelters throughout the City of Norfolk.  The shelters are equipped with a bench, overhead protection from inclement weather, solar lights, and are ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) accessible. 

This project is part of an overall plan by Hampton Roads Transit to provide 600 shelters throughout Hampton Roads with some form of passenger amenity to enhance the customer experience.  The bus shelter improvements, along with more frequent routes (757 Express) and technology upgrades, were made possible by funding legislation passed by the Virginia General Assembly in 2020.

The cost estimate for the project is approximately $1.3 million with the Preliminary Engineering (PE) phase underway.  Installation of the new shelters in the City of Norfolk will take place during 2023 and 2024.
