The current Long-Range Transportation Plan (LRTP) for the Hampton Roads region, which was developed collaboratively with regional stakeholders and the public, has a planning horizon year of 2045 and was adopted by the Hampton Roads Transportation Planning Organization (HRTPO) Board on June 17, 2021.

The 2045 Long-Range Transportation Plan will
use innovative planning techniques to advance an adaptive transportation system that will seamlessly integrate transportation modes for all users while improving quality of life and preserving the unique character of Hampton Roads

In efforts to enhance public engagement through visual storytelling, the Hampton Roads 2045 Long-Range Transportation Plan StoryMap was recently created to provide an overview of the LRTP process.

The 2045 LRTP is documented through a series of twelve reports, which are highlighted in this StoryMap. Each report outlines important components and considerations of the 2045 LRTP. To access any of the 2045 LRTP series of reports, please visit: https://www.hrtpo.org/page/2045-long_range-transportation-plan/

The 2045 LRTP StoryMap also includes visual and interactive maps, dashboards, and other engaging information. The StoryMap walks through the LRTP process, highlighting the twelve reports in the order they were produced.

Example Page from the 2045 LRTP Story MapSince the plan adoption, the 2045 LRTP has been amended twice to reflect new projects, updated project information, and new funding assumptions. The latest amendment, occurring in July 2022, is anticipated to be approved by the HRTPO Board at its July 21, 2022 meeting.

The Amended 2045 LRTP establishes a funding plan for approximately 145 multimodal transportation projects totaling around $15.8 billion in planned investments. The plan contains major improvements to bridges, tunnels, roads, and interchanges across the region. The plan also includes enhanced transit service, planned Bus Rapid Transit on the Peninsula, and new regional bicycle and pedestrian facilities. As a system, these planned investments will help achieve the overall 2045 LRTP vision of an adaptive transportation system that seamlessly integrates transportation modes for all users

Looking ahead, since LRTPs are updated regularly (every five years in Hampton Roads) to reflect changing conditions, HRTPO staff has initiated the process to update the Hampton Roads LRTP to the next planning horizon year of 2050. Over the next four years, HRTPO staff will work with local, state, and Federal stakeholders as well as with communities across the region to develop the 2050 LRTP. Stay tuned for upcoming 2050 LRTP StoryMaps!
