TRAIL OF THE MONTH: Noland Trail (Newport News)

In October 2019, HRTPO staff started highlighting multi-use trails in Hampton Roads with the Cape Henry Trail in Virginia Beach. This month, staff is highlighting the Noland Trail, which is a 5-mile gravel loop that features a lake and is good for all skill levels. It is located near Christopher Newport University in Newport News, Virginia. The primary use is walking and running, and it is accessible year-round. Dogs are also permitted on the trail, but must be leashed.

The trail follows a coastal plain forest around Lake Maury and includes 14 wooden bridges that cross over segments of the lake and provide different views, like the one next to Warwick Boulevard shown on the photo below.

Trail markers occur every half mile starting from both the North and South Entrances, and they also serve to mark the various overlooks on the trail. A view from one of the overlooks is shown on the photo below.
