Hampton Roads 2050 Long-Range Transportation Plan Regional Priorities Public Survey Results

Screen capture from the WVEC news storyThe Hampton Roads Transportation Planning Organization (HRTPO) is updating the Long-Range Transportation Plan (LRTP) to the horizon year 2050.  This plan will address future transportation needs for the region.  As part of the development of the 2050 LRTP, HRTPO staff developed a MetroQuest public survey to help identify regional priorities and important transportation issues. This survey was made available online between October 1, 2022 and November 1, 2022, through various outreach methods, including HRTPO websites, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and locality websites. HRTPO staff also posted flyers advertising the survey at libraries across the region.  Additionally, the survey was publicized through WTKR News 3 and WAVY-TV.

Word Cloud from LRTP Survey ResponsesThe survey comprised 18 questions that covered a range of topics, including proposed goals, regional issues, transportation problems, congestion, public health, equity, and future transportation. Additionally, survey participants had the opportunity to provide input on a vision and goals for the 2050 LRTP.

A few key takeaways that most survey respondents prioritized as a top priority for the 2050 LRTP are:

  • Resiliency
  • Public transportation
  • Reducing congestion
  • Increasing bicycle and pedestrian options
  • Providing newer/cleaner transportation technologies

Other key takeaways and major goals that are important to the survey participants when envisioning what transportation will look like in the year 2050 are:

  • Better/enhanced transit
  • Multimodal/travel choices
  • Improved connectivity
  • Planning transportation improvements to increase accessibility, connectivity, and the mobility of people and goods
  • Increasing safety and security for all users across all transportation modes
  • Building an efficient, resilient, and innovative transportation network

As next steps, HRTPO staff, in coordination with locality stakeholders, will evaluate the Regional Priorities Survey results to create a vision, goals, and objectives for the 2050 LRTP.
