HRTPO Hosts First Town Hall Public Meeting for Long Range Transportation Plan 2034

On December 2, 2010 Hampton Roads Transportation Planning Organization (HRTPO) joined with Thoroughgood Elementary School in Virginia Beach to present the Long Range Transportation Plan 2034 and Project Prioritization Summary for the Region.  Over 250 parents, teachers and students attended the Town Hall meeting, which was held in Thoroughgood Elementary School’s cafeteria.

Following the presentation given by Camelia Ravanbakht, HRTPO Deputy Executive Director, 125 students from the 5th grade class presented their Box Community to their parents, teachers, and the HRTPO staff.

As part of the “Ask Me About Transportation” School Outreach Program, HRPTO conducted a 2 month educational program detailing transportation and urban planning.  The goal of the program is to teach the students about planning, and to make students aware of the considerations HRTPO staff must take while developing a Long Range Transportation Plan.

The results of the students efforts was a box city that spanned the cafeteria stage, and an increased understanding on both the part of the students, and their teachers and parents of the HRTPO and its programs , as well as how those programs and projects affect the community in which we live and work.
