By Matthew Harrington, Transportation Planner

HRTPO Staff regularly highlights a project that is currently being implemented in the Hampton Roads Region. The Williamsburg Area Transit Authority (WATA) is currently creating a new transfer station with its WATA Transfer Station Hub Project.

Currently WATA partners with Walmart and Lowe’s Home Improvement on E/ Rochambeau Drive to use their facilities as a transfer location. The new transfer center will enhance the rider and operator experience by providing Indoor/Outdoor waiting areas, real-time rider information displays, a ticketing and information office, and administrative and operations break spaces. Along with these amenities, this new 3,800 square-foot facility will also include public restrooms as well as six bus bays to allow for future expansion.

On April 3, 2025, WATA held a groundbreaking ceremony to commemorate the beginning of the construction process for this new facility. This facility accompanies other improvements to the rider experience that WATA is currently making such as the new operations and maintenance facility as well as the recently launched mobile ticketing app.

The new facility will be located at the intersection of Mooretown Road and Old Mooretown Road just south of the Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center. It is expected to be completed by August 2026, with a total estimated cost of about $11 million.

On August 20, 2025, based on feedback received from the public, the WATA Board of Directors officially approved the new name for the transfer hub to be the WATA North Transit Center.
