On Sunday, the Hampton Roads Transportation Accountability Commission team was saddened to learn of the sudden passing of our friend, colleague, and HRTAC Board Member, Mr. William McCarty.
Mr. McCarty was on the HRTAC Board from 2020 until his passing, also serving as a member of the HRTAC Finance Committee since June 2022.
Thanks to his consistent work with HRTAC and throughout the region, Mr. McCarty was well loved and respected among his Board and Commission peers. HRTAC Chair and Mayor Chesapeake, Dr. Richard W. “Rick” West recalls, “Mr. McCarty worked tirelessly to ensure that his input contributed to HRTAC enhancing the economic vitality and quality of life of all people in Hampton Roads. We will miss him deeply.”
During his time on the HRTAC Board, Mr. McCarty worked as a member of the HRTAC Finance Committee. Finance Committee Chair and James City County Supervisor Michael Hipple commented that, “Mr. McCarty worked hard as a member of the Finance Committee to continue all projects within budget during COVID. The work and recommendations of the Finance Committee during this time are attributed to the success of the HRBT Tunnel Project and the completion of nearly 200 lane miles of improvements along I-64 in the region. His leadership on the finance committee will be greatly missed.”
Of course, during his time at HRTAC, Mr. McCarty was also available to the Commission staff. On behalf of the organization, Kevin Page, Executive Director of HRTAC offered this: “We are deeply saddened by the sudden passing of William McCarty. He was always available and exhibited great care as a regional leader and provided tremendous contributions to discussions about improving transportation in the Hampton Roads region. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, Isle of Wight County and our regional community.”
